How the world of Wench came to be: an embroidered tale of rags to riches
I remember coming home one day from a Rhondda Valley jumble sale with a bin bag full of weird and woolly items and a belly full of tea and cake, all for a pound.
Most of the items were totally out of my league, as I was twelve and tiny at the time, but hope for their future lay in the old Singer sewing machine sitting in the back room.
Hours of gleeful cutting and stitching later and many wonderful new garments had been born, at least to my eyes. I’m not sure my mother quite agreed, but by then I was hooked and have been creating fabulous frocks and daring dresses ever since.
I love making clothes and wearing unusual garments and I also delight in creating outfits for others, but the best feeling of all is empowering people to create a personal style all of their own.
Unwanted and unloved clothes are everywhere these days, so much so that we really don’t need to buy new ones anymore.
What the world needs is for us to make better use of those that are already here, creating new clothing from old that we can keep on wearing day in and day out.
And the best part of it? Making your own clothes is lots of fun!
